History of Chino Valley

Nestled in the stunning mountains of Central Arizona, the beautiful city of Chino Valley has a long, rich history and heritage as the site of the first Territorial Capital of the state. While traveling through the area, it was U.S. Army Cavalry Lieutenant Amiel W. Whipple that named the community after the abundant curly grama grass common to the area. For many years, farmers here grew alfalfa and corn and raised cattle; then, in 1864, the capital moved to Prescott, fifteen miles south of Chino Valley.
